Pharmacological properties
Mepregenol acetate is a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone progesterone in females. Ethinylestradiol is the analog of the sex hormone that is synthesized by ovarian follicles in females. Via the negative feedback mechanism with the hypothalamic-pituitary system mepregenol acetate and ethinylestradiol suppress the secretion of gonadotropic hormones in the pituitary gland (luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones) which inhibits the maturation of ovarian follicles, slows down the starting of estrus, causes changes in the biochemical composition of the uterine mucosa, creating a barrier to the sperm cell penetration into its cavity, and in case of spontaneous mating prevents the fertilization of an egg.
Usage and dosage
In order to decrease aggressiveness and increased excitability, to delay the estrus, it is recommended to administer the drug within 7-14 days prior to the expected estrus daily for 5-7 days twice a day.
The daily dose depends on the animal’s body weight and constitutes:
- Up to 5 kg – 1 drop;
- From 5.1 to 10 kg – 2-4 drops;
- From 10.1 to 30 kg - 5-8 drops;
- Over 30 kg – 9+1 drop for each subsequent 5 kg of body weight.
To prevent unwanted pregnancy in case of accidental mating, the drug is given for two days. The first use of the drug should be no later than 24 hours after the accidental mating.
